Aussies Top Domestic Water Consumption

Australians, despite living in the driest continent are the most profligate with domestic water use. This from a recent study, summarised in The Age.

I've studied the 9 sections of your graphic, and I believe you Aussies can do without 7 of them. If you can find the environmental discipline to live with just beer and coffee you should be able to maintain a sustainable level of water usage. The world's moral support is with you in this endeavour.

My wife would have an issue with giving up designer shoes.

The milk figure surprises me. I don't see how it can out do Beer, let alone Coffee.

I believe that animal meat and milk are impacted by the time it takes to develop and keep the animal alive. The calculation that the average volume of a rainwater tank is needed to feed a family of four a meal is staggering. I am interested to read some of the science behind the figures.

That people in this country are still selfish enough to use top load washing machines which on average use 150-200 litres of water per load is one of the reasons we consume so much water.

Any government with balls would ban the things. We don't have a government with balls, so it is up to Joe Public to choose front loaders EVERY time.

snoskred - You think your government lacks balls? I checked your profile to see if you were talking about Australia... and yep! Let me tell you now, if you think John Howard's outfit lacks guts, then don't bother looking at any of the damp squib governments.

Unless of course you want a more bossy government (as I suspect from your first paragraph). In which case, move to Britain. This crowd will ban anything. You'd really get a kick out of them, especially since they've already banned every other way to get your kicks...

As far as I'm concerned, good on them for leaving it up to Joe Public. If the Aussies can't manage their water, then they deserve to sizzle.

I say - Let water companies start charging what it's really worth and market forces will take effect. People will figure out what they really want to pay for their shoes.

Bossy governments do not solve problems. They make problems and they divest Joe Public of personal responsibility. Then you end up (like us in Britain) with useless sheeple blaming the government for all their woes.

Wow... why does it take so much water to make shoes?

Do I need to give up my shoe habit?
